Mercedes-Benz has received approval to test turquoise marker lights for automated driving in Germany. Learn how this innovation enhances road safety and signals autonomous operation.

A new chapter in autonomous driving is unfolding as Mercedes-Benz becomes the first automaker to receive official approval for testing special marker lights in Germany. This decision paves the way for future regulations and sets a new standard for self-driving technologies.

The turquoise lights, integrated into front and rear headlights as well as side indicators, indicate that a vehicle is operating under DRIVE PILOT—the world’s first commercially available SAE-Level 3 automated driving system. The color was carefully selected based on research, showing that turquoise provides maximum visibility and minimizes confusion with existing traffic signals.

Germany, the first European country to allow such testing, has granted a special exemption for trials across the country. The approval remains valid until July 2028 and may serve as a foundation for further legislation on self-driving vehicles in Europe. Similar exemptions were granted in the U.S., in the states of Nevada and California, where testing began in late 2023.

What changes with this innovation?

First, turquoise marker lights help enhance road safety. They provide clear signals to other drivers that an autonomous system is in control, allowing law enforcement and traffic authorities to easily assess compliance with automation regulations.

Second, the implementation of DRIVE PILOT marks a major step toward the mainstream adoption of autonomous cars. The system is already capable of operating at speeds up to 95 km/h (59 mph), making it the fastest Level 3 system in a production vehicle worldwide. Expectations are high that this limit will be increased over time.

The approval in Germany and ongoing tests in the U.S. suggest that the automotive industry is ready for the next evolution. If testing confirms the effectiveness of turquoise lights, similar regulations may soon be adopted globally.

Mercedes-Benz continues to lead the way in autonomous driving, shaping a future where vehicles can navigate roads without active driver involvement.
