Toyota Motor Europe introduces the FT-Me, a compact electric vehicle designed for urban mobility. Discover its sustainable design, smart technology, and accessibility features.

Toyota Motor Europe has introduced the FT-Me concept, a compact electric vehicle designed to redefine urban transportation. Measuring less than 2.5 meters in length, this two-seater combines sleek design, practicality, and sustainability, offering city dwellers an alternative to traditional cars.

Developed to address the evolving challenges of urban environments, the FT-Me is highly maneuverable, occupying only half a standard parking space—or just one-third when perpendicular parking is possible. Its design, inspired by a jet helmet, features a black-and-white bi-tone scheme, emphasizing its robust yet lightweight character.

Toyota has also made accessibility a priority. In some European markets, the FT-Me can be driven by individuals as young as 14, opening up new mobility options for younger drivers. Additionally, its innovative hand-control steering system allows for operation solely by hand commands, making it fully usable for wheelchair users without any aftermarket modifications.

As part of Toyota’s commitment to carbon neutrality, the FT-Me is built with sustainable materials and maximizes recyclability, aiming for a 90% reduction in carbon footprint compared to today’s city vehicles. The vehicle's efficient propulsion system consumes three times less energy per kilometer than a high-capacity battery electric car, further enhancing its sustainability.

One of the FT-Me’s standout features is its solar panel roof, which can charge the main battery and provide between 20 to 30 km of additional range per day, depending on weather conditions. This added range could eliminate the need for daily charging for many users, making it a practical solution for urban commuting.

Toyota has also integrated advanced safety and convenience features, including an innovative 360-degree visibility concept that enhances situational awareness by maximizing eye contact with other road users. This feature improves safety and maneuverability in dense city environments. Additionally, the FT-Me supports smartphone connectivity for seamless keyless entry and service management.

The FT-Me aligns with Toyota’s "Mobility for All" philosophy, following in the footsteps of mobility solutions developed for the Tokyo 2021 and Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Now, the company is shifting its focus to everyday urban commuting.

Though still a concept, the FT-Me showcases Toyota’s forward-looking approach to city transportation: compact, versatile, accessible, and environmentally friendly. The industry will be watching closely to see how Toyota develops this vision into a production-ready model.
