Rivian Introduces Enhanced Highway Assist and New Performance Features

Rivian’s latest software update 2025.06 brings Enhanced Highway Assist for hands-free driving, Rally Mode expansion, and a performance boost for R1S and R1T models. Learn more about the new features.
Rivian continues to enhance its R1S and R1T electric vehicles through over-the-air updates, with the latest 2025.06 software release bringing a host of new features. Among the biggest improvements are Enhanced Highway Assist, an expansion of Rally Mode for Performance Dual-Motor models, and a new Performance Upgrade package.
The highlight of this update is Enhanced Highway Assist, Rivian’s latest iteration of its driver assistance system. Like its predecessor, this version allows for extended hands-free driving on highways while still requiring driver supervision. While this feature is launching with Gen 2 vehicles (2025 model year and later), Rivian has not yet confirmed whether it will be made available for earlier models.
For those seeking a more engaging driving experience, Rivian has expanded Rally Mode, now available for Performance Dual-Motor variants. This mode, already featured on other R1 models, sharpens throttle response and improves steering precision, enhancing vehicle control on rough terrain.
Additionally, Rivian has introduced a Performance Upgrade for Dual-Motor models equipped with Standard+, Large, and Max battery packs. This $5,000 add-on increases output to 665 horsepower and 829 lb-ft of torque, while unlocking three new drive modes: Sport, Rally, and Soft Sand.
But the updates don’t stop there. Rivian has also introduced a wheel swap registration system, allowing drivers to input different aftermarket wheel-and-tire setups for more accurate range estimations. Other convenience features include automatic side mirror tilt-down in reverse, remote charge port closure via the mobile app, and a chime notification when the car ahead starts moving.
One notable addition is tire puncture detection, which helps drivers monitor potential issues in real time. Most of these features will be available for both Gen 1 and Gen 2 vehicles immediately, though the chime notification feature will first roll out to Gen 2 models before expanding to Gen 1 at a later date.
These software-driven improvements reinforce Rivian’s strategy of staying competitive through continuous innovation. The ability to unlock new features via over-the-air updates is not just a convenience—it’s becoming a core aspect of the company’s business model. Analysts note that this approach strengthens Rivian’s position in the EV market, particularly as it faces increasing competition from Tesla, Ford, and GM.
