Hyundai Ioniq 5 XRT: An Electric Crossover Built for Adventure

Discover Hyundai's Ioniq 5 XRT, an electric crossover with increased ground clearance, all-terrain tires, and advanced driving modes. Learn how it compares to competitors like the Ford Mustang Mach-E Rally.
Hyundai is expanding its lineup of electric crossovers with the new Ioniq 5 XRT, designed to tackle rough terrain. This model combines advanced technology, stylish design, and off-road capability, positioning itself as a competitor to vehicles like the Ford Mustang Mach-E Rally.
The most noticeable upgrade is the increased ground clearance: the suspension has been raised by 23 mm, resulting in 178 mm of clearance from the ground to the underbody. This improvement enhances approach angles (19.8° compared to the previous 17.5°) and departure angles (30° compared to 25.4°), enabling the vehicle to navigate steeper slopes and rougher terrain. All-terrain Continental CrossContact ATR tires (235/60R-18) further enhance traction on sand, mud, and snow.
The exterior has also been ruggedized: black bumpers with digital camouflage accents emphasize its adventurous character, while bright red tow hooks at the front hint at its readiness for extreme conditions. The upgrades aren’t just cosmetic—new driving modes like “Mud” and “Sand”, alongside the standard “Snow” mode, help the vehicle adapt to various off-road challenges.
Under the hood, dual electric motors deliver a combined 320 horsepower, powered by an 84 kWh battery. With an EPA-estimated range of 259 miles (approximately 417 km), the Ioniq 5 XRT offers both capability and long-distance endurance. Notably, all 2025 Ioniq 5 models now feature larger battery capacities, with the standard version upgraded to 63 kWh from the previous 58 kWh.
Compared to previous Ioniq 5 models, the latest version marks a clear shift toward versatility. While earlier iterations focused on urban comfort and range, Hyundai now aims to capture the attention of adventure-seekers looking for an electric vehicle that can handle off-road conditions. The competition in this segment is heating up—especially with the arrival of the Ford Mustang Mach-E Rally, which offers more power but doesn’t yet match the Ioniq 5 XRT’s balance of practicality and off-road capability.
The bottom line? The Hyundai Ioniq 5 XRT is well-positioned to attract drivers who crave adventure without sacrificing sustainability. With production for the U.S. market set to take place at Hyundai's HMGMA plant in Georgia, it won’t be long before the XRT hits American showrooms.
