Hyundai has received five IIHS Top Safety Pick+ awards for its 2025 models, meeting stricter crash test criteria. Learn which models earned the highest safety ratings.

Passenger safety continues to be a top priority as Hyundai secures five TOP SAFETY PICK+ awards from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The 2025 IONIQ 5, IONIQ 6, Kona (non-EV), Tucson/Tucson Hybrid, and Santa Fe/Santa Fe Hybrid (built after November 2024) have all earned the highest safety rating.

This recognition is particularly notable given the updated IIHS criteria for 2025, which include stricter requirements for second-row passenger protection. To qualify for a TOP SAFETY PICK award, vehicles must receive at least an acceptable rating in the revised moderate overlap front crash test, while a good rating is required for the TOP SAFETY PICK+ designation. Additionally, vehicles must earn good ratings in the small overlap front and updated side tests, as well as an acceptable or good rating in the pedestrian front crash prevention evaluation, which assesses performance in both daytime and nighttime conditions. Furthermore, all trims must be equipped with headlights rated as acceptable or good to meet IIHS standards.

Cole Stutz, Chief Safety Officer at Hyundai Motor North America, emphasized the company's commitment to advancing vehicle safety through technology. He noted that Hyundai has integrated a suite of SmartSense advanced safety features, including improved seatbelt technology, a rear occupant alert system, and additional side airbags for rear passengers, to enhance overall protection.

IIHS President David Harkey pointed out that automakers are continually challenged to improve vehicle safety, with each new model year requiring higher standards of protection. The updated moderate overlap front crash test now includes a second-row dummy, replacing the previous version of the test, prompting manufacturers to refine their designs to enhance passenger safety.

Hyundai’s strong performance in these safety evaluations reinforces its position as an industry leader. This year, Hyundai Motor Group—including Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis—earned a total of 12 IIHS safety awards, the highest among all automakers. With this recognition, Hyundai continues to offer a well-balanced combination of innovation, affordability, and high safety standards, further strengthening its appeal to consumers.
