Russell Takes Podium, Antonelli Shines on F1 Debut in Australia

Detailed recap of the 2025 Australian Grand Prix as Mercedes claims a podium with Russell and rookie Antonelli impresses with P4. Full race results and analysis.
The 2025 Formula 1 season roared into action in Melbourne with a thrilling and unpredictable race. The Australian Grand Prix delivered drama, tricky weather, and a breakout performance from Mercedes’ rookie.
It was a mixed podium that reflected the shifting fortunes of the race. Lando Norris claimed victory for McLaren, mastering the changing conditions with confidence. Max Verstappen secured second for Red Bull, while George Russell finished third, securing Mercedes’ first podium of the season.
Yet, much of the post-race attention was drawn to 18-year-old Andrea Kimi Antonelli. Starting a lowly 16th after suffering floor damage in qualifying, the Italian rookie delivered an impressive, mature drive. He carefully picked his way through the field, managing his tires and reacting perfectly to the shifting weather. Late in the race, he overtook Alex Albon to cross the line in fourth place. However, a five-second penalty for an unsafe release initially dropped him to fifth, before being rescinded post-race, officially restoring his P4 finish.
Weather was the great equalizer. After sunny practice sessions, Sunday brought rain and cooler temperatures. All drivers started on intermediate tires, as light drizzle persisted during the early laps. A mid-race safety car provided an opportunity for teams to switch to dry compounds, with Mercedes opting for hard tires. With just over 10 laps remaining, the heaviest downpour of the race hit, throwing strategies into chaos. Mercedes reacted swiftly, calling both drivers in at the perfect moment—a move that proved decisive in the final classification.
Antonelli's debut was not just impressive—it was historic. He became the second-youngest driver ever to score points in Formula 1, and the youngest to do so on debut, surpassing Max Verstappen’s record.
Elsewhere, not every top team found their rhythm. Ferrari struggled in the wet conditions, with Charles Leclerc finishing eighth and Lewis Hamilton tenth. Multiple crashes and retirements shaped the race’s final order, adding to the chaos.
For Mercedes, the weekend showcased the results of their winter efforts on the new W16 car. The team focused on improving low-speed performance and tire management—progress that was already visible on track.
Next up is the Chinese Grand Prix, a circuit where Mercedes has historically been strong. With six previous wins in Shanghai, the team knows the venue well. However, this year's earlier slot in March and expected cooler weather could shake things up. It will be another test of adaptability—and another opportunity for Mercedes to build momentum in this promising start to 2025.
