GM and Nvidia Join Forces on Self-Driving Cars and AI Technologies

General Motors partners with Nvidia to develop autonomous vehicles, optimize manufacturing, and deploy AI-driven robots. Learn about their future plans and technologies.
General Motors is advancing its autonomous vehicle strategy through a strategic collaboration with Nvidia. The partnership aims to develop next-generation vehicles, optimize manufacturing processes, and explore applications of AI-driven robotics.
GM will integrate Nvidia's high-tech AI chips, already utilized by major automakers such as Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, and Chinese brands BYD and Li Auto. These chips will support the company’s advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) of Level 2 and beyond, though GM has not disclosed which specific chip version it will use. Nvidia offers multiple options, including AGX Orin, capable of 254 trillion operations per second (TOPS), and AGX Thor, which reaches up to 1,000 TOPS with its Blackwell GPU. Nvidia’s Drive OS will also play a role in in-vehicle interface operations.
Nvidia remains a dominant force in high-performance computing for self-driving technology, with a market valuation nearing $3 trillion. However, GM must navigate significant challenges, including legal and insurance complexities related to autonomous systems, as well as cybersecurity concerns.
Following the shutdown of its Cruise robotaxi division after a major accident, GM has taken a more measured approach. Instead of prioritizing full autonomy, the company is expanding its Super Cruise system, which is already deployed in 360,000 vehicles.
With Tesla planning to launch its robotaxi service in Austin by summer 2025 and Waymo maintaining a lead in large-scale deployments, GM’s collaboration with Nvidia could prove to be a pivotal move. However, the timeline for tangible market results remains uncertain.
