Toyoda Gosei reports on a reversible armrest for the new Toyota RAV4, combining an armrest and tray in one console design. Learn more about the concept.

Toyoda Gosei has introduced a new interior solution in the form of a reversible armrest designed to serve two purposes within the vehicle cabin. In its standard position, it functions as a conventional armrest, while a simple reversal turns it into a tray. The new component has already been adopted for the latest Toyota RAV4, underlining its readiness for real-world use.

The key to this functionality lies in the console box with a removable lid. By turning the lid over, users gain a flat tray surface suitable for placing items. According to Toyoda Gosei, this concept builds on the company’s long-standing experience in supplying console boxes with lids that can be opened from either side, refining that idea into a more flexible and intuitive solution.

The company positions the reversible armrest as a response to increasingly diverse user needs, reflecting how vehicle interiors are expected to adapt to different situations and lifestyles. This practical innovation was recognized by Toyota Motor Corporation with a CE Special Award as part of its internal Project Awards program, which highlights supplier contributions that enhance usability and product value.

Its application in the new RAV4 aligns with a broader industry shift toward multifunctional central console elements. Armrests and consoles are no longer limited to a single role but are evolving into adaptable components that support storage, convenience, and everyday usability without compromising ergonomics.

Looking ahead, Toyoda Gosei says it will continue leveraging its expertise in the development and manufacturing of cockpit-related products. With several recently developed technologies already featured on the new RAV4, the reversible armrest appears to be part of a wider, ongoing effort to make vehicle interiors more comfortable and versatile.
