Rivian Spins Off Also Inc. for New Micromobility Vehicle Focus

Rivian announced a spin-off of its micromobility unit into Also Inc., a startup focused on lightweight electric vehicles. Read more about the strategy and future plans.
Rivian has officially spun off its micromobility business into a separate company, Also, Inc., which will focus on small electric vehicles designed to tackle today’s urban transportation challenges through sustainability and innovation.
The move follows several years of internal R&D efforts within Rivian, where the company explored how its expertise in software, electronics, and electric propulsion could be adapted to smaller form factors. This internal initiative evolved to a point where a dedicated company with distinct branding and market focus became the logical next step.
Also, Inc. will be led by President Chris Yu, formerly VP of Future Programs at Rivian. RJ Scaringe, Rivian’s CEO, will serve as Chairman of the Board. While Rivian will not manage Also directly, it retains a significant minority stake and foresees future collaboration, including potential use of its retail footprint.
The new company has secured a $105 million investment from Eclipse Ventures, positioning it for growth and rapid product development. While product specifics have not yet been disclosed, Also is known to be working on a portfolio of lightweight electric vehicles for both consumer and business applications.
Also has global ambitions, with plans to launch its flagship product in the U.S. and Europe by 2026, followed by region-specific vehicles for Asia and South America. Still, the micromobility space remains challenging, with past players like Bird and VanMoof struggling with high costs and regulatory hurdles.
Meanwhile, Rivian remains focused on its core EV business, advancing toward the production and delivery of the midsize R2 SUV, scheduled to begin in Normal, Illinois, in the first half of 2026.
