BMW’s Debrecen plant begins assembly of Neue Klasse iX3, featuring fossil-free operations and modular EV architecture. Learn more about the ramp-up.

The BMW Group's new plant in Debrecen, Hungary, has reached a major milestone: the assembly line is now operational. This marks the moment when the “heartbeat” of the plant begins to beat, ahead of the start of series production for the all-new BMW iX3, scheduled for late 2025.

According to Hans-Peter Kemser, Managing Director of the Debrecen plant, the launch went smoothly thanks to advanced virtual planning and seamless collaboration with BMW’s global production network. Backed by over €2 billion in investment, the site already employs hundreds and is poised to play a pivotal role in BMW’s electric ambitions.

The iX3 will be the first vehicle based on BMW’s Neue Klasse architecture — a platform that brings significant assembly benefits. The vehicle’s zonal wiring reduces cabling by 600 meters and weight by 30%. Modular design further simplifies the process by cutting down on the number of plugs, screws, and clips. Digital quality control integrated directly into the production line boosts precision and will soon be replicated at BMW’s Munich plant for the upcoming sedan version of the Neue Klasse in 2026.

The Debrecen plant also introduces next-generation logistics. Inspired by the “finger structure” first used in Leipzig, up to 80% of components are delivered directly to the line — the highest ratio in the BMW network. Cockpit pre-assembly, located beside the main line as seen at BMW Plant Lydia in China, ensures rapid and ergonomic installation.

But this isn’t just another factory. It’s the first BMW automobile plant designed to operate entirely without fossil fuels — a bold statement in the brand’s pursuit of climate-neutral production.

The Neue Klasse represents more than a new product range; it’s BMW’s roadmap for the future: electric, digital, and sustainable. And the Debrecen plant is its first fully realized chapter — built from the ground up, powered by cutting-edge technology, and driven by a vision of clean mobility.
