Chevrolet Equinox EV led non-Tesla electric car sales in the U.S. in 2025, according to InsideEVs, highlighting shifting dynamics in the EV market.

The U.S. electric car market has a new leader outside the Tesla brand. In 2025, the Chevrolet Equinox EV became the best-selling non-Tesla electric vehicle in the country, reinforcing General Motors’ position as the second-largest EV player in the American market.

A total of 57,945 Equinox EVs were sold during the year—nearly double the volume recorded in 2024, when the model was available for only part of the year. That performance allowed the crossover to overtake the previous non-Tesla leader, the Ford Mustang Mach-E, which ended the year with 51,620 units shipped.

The Equinox EV’s rise is closely tied to its market positioning. The model combines a driving range of more than 300 miles with a price point in the mid-$30,000 range, placing it among the most accessible electric crossovers in the mass-market segment. Until the end of September 2025, the vehicle also benefited from the $7,500 federal EV tax credit, further boosting its appeal to cost-conscious buyers.

On the back of this momentum, General Motors sold nearly 170,000 electric vehicles in the U.S. last year, marking an approximate 48% increase compared with 2024. The Equinox EV played a central role in that growth, becoming a cornerstone of GM’s broader EV strategy.

Other strong performers among non-Tesla electric vehicles in 2025 included the Hyundai Ioniq 5 with 47,039 sales and the Honda Prologue, which reached 39,194 units. These models were already among the segment’s top sellers the year before, pointing to a relatively stable group of contenders beyond Tesla’s lineup.

Looking ahead to 2026, the overall hierarchy is expected to remain largely intact, though new dynamics are emerging. Automakers are preparing more affordable electric models, while the market adjusts to life after federal purchase incentives. Against that backdrop, the race to become America’s most popular non-Tesla EV is far from settled—and the Equinox EV has now set the benchmark.
