Volkswagen marks Polo’s 50th anniversary with rare 1975 and 1977 models at Bremen Classic Motorshow 2025. Experience the legacy on display.

Volkswagen has kicked off the 50th anniversary year of its iconic Polo with a nostalgic yet striking presence at the Bremen Classic Motorshow 2025. Two first-generation models – a 1975 Polo L and a rare hill climb Polo from 1977 – took centre stage at Stand D08 in Hall 5, offering visitors a rare glimpse into the early years of this compact success story.

With its 0.9-litre engine delivering 40 PS and weighing only 685 kilograms, the Oceanic Blue Polo L represented everything the original Polo stood for: practicality, efficiency and simplicity. Advertisements of the time summed it up well — “Small size. Large space.” The car’s generous luggage capacity of up to 900 litres and modest touches of comfort, like a two-speed blower and carpeting, showed how Volkswagen envisioned functionality without compromise.

Sharing the spotlight was a much more aggressive sibling — the 1977 hill climb Polo. This unique motorsport version, featuring a 1.3-litre engine producing 110 PS, was actively raced for around 20 years. After a full restoration, it returned to competition in 2022 at the Osnabrück hill climb race. Its short gear ratio and built-in roll cage underlined its racing credentials, and its Bali Green body made sure it stood out not just in performance, but in presence.

The Bremen Classic Motorshow, traditionally marking the start of the season for vintage car enthusiasts, attracted around 50,000 visitors this year. Volkswagen Classic’s participation, alongside Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles Oldtimer, Audi Tradition, Škoda, and Autostadt, offered a cohesive display of automotive heritage across the VW Group.

The presence of these two historic Polos wasn’t just a celebration of the past — it also served as a reminder of the journey the model has taken. From humble beginnings in the mid-70s to becoming a global bestseller with over 20 million units sold, the Polo continues to represent what Volkswagen does best: blend innovation, reliability, and accessibility.
