Genesis GV80 EV Coming in 2028, Hybrid Version Launches First

Genesis is doubling down on its ambitions in the luxury SUV segment with a dual strategy: hybrids first, followed by full electrification. Although Genesis had planned to launch only EVs starting in 2024, the brand has since shifted course and is now introducing hybrids as well.

According to South Korean blogger MotorsJason, the next-generation GV80 will arrive in 2026 or 2027 with a new 2.5-liter hybrid engine. Currently, the model is available with either a 2.5L four-cylinder or a twin-turbo 3.5L V6. The addition of a hybrid variant could broaden its appeal in a highly competitive segment.

But Genesis isn’t stopping there. A fully electric GV80 EV is expected in 2028, built on Hyundai’s next-generation eM platform, set to replace the current E-GMP. As reported by InsideEVs, the new architecture is designed for all types of EVs — from sedans to pickups — and is expected to offer up to 50% more range, Level 3 autonomous driving capabilities, and over-the-air software updates.

Size-wise, the GV80 EV will be comparable to the BMW iX and slightly larger than the Tesla Model Y. With this positioning, Genesis is aiming squarely at the heart of the premium electric SUV market, where it will face off against rivals like BMW, Porsche, and possibly Mercedes-Benz.

While technical specifications, pricing, production locations, and market launch details remain under wraps, Genesis’ pivot to a mixed powertrain strategy reflects its pragmatic approach to global market dynamics. Rather than betting on a single path, the brand is keeping its options open — and in doing so, it might be paving a more resilient route into the electrified future.
