Alfa Romeo GTA named top Italian classic at 2025 Motor Klassik Awards

The Alfa Romeo GTA triumphed in the 2025 Motor Klassik Awards, winning the “Italian Classics” category with 37.6% of the vote. Discover its legacy and impact.
Almost 60 years after its first major racing triumph, the Alfa Romeo GTA finds itself back in the spotlight — this time in the hearts of classic car enthusiasts. Readers of the renowned magazine Motor Klassik voted the legendary coupé as their top choice in the “Italian Classics” category of the 2025 Motor Klassik Awards.
First unveiled in 1965, the Giulia GTA was a lightweight variant of the standard Giulia coupé, built with motorsport in mind. Its use of Peraluman alloy for the body and extensive technical enhancements brought its weight down to just 745 kg. Powered by a 1.6-liter engine with twin ignition and dual Weber carburetors, the GTA delivered a remarkable 115 hp — and up to 170 hp in its racing iterations.
On the track, the GTA quickly made its mark. With multiple victories in the European Touring Car Championship during the 1960s and iconic drivers like Andrea de Adamich and Jochen Rindt behind the wheel, it cemented its status as a racing legend. Today, the Giulia Sprint 1600 GTA remains a highly prized collector's item, fetching over €100,000, with documented racing models commanding several times more.
In 2025, the GTA once again took center stage. It received 37.6% of the votes, beating out illustrious rivals such as Ferrari, Maserati, and Lamborghini. This win underscores the enduring appeal of Alfa Romeo among classic car aficionados. It's worth noting that Alfa Romeo has a history of success at the Motor Klassik Awards — in 2023, the 1980s GTV6 was also honored.
Although no official statements from Alfa Romeo or Stellantis have been published regarding this latest recognition, the brand’s consistent presence among the award winners speaks volumes. The combination of motorsport heritage and bold engineering embodied in the GTA continues to inspire admiration across generations.
