BYD sold nearly 1 million EVs in Q1 2025, with exports and tech-driven growth boosting global expansion. Discover what’s behind this electric surge.

China’s automotive giant BYD has kicked off 2025 with a record-breaking performance, selling nearly one million new energy vehicles (NEVs) in the first quarter — 986,098 of them were passenger cars. March was a standout month, with 377,420 NEVs sold globally, including 371,419 passenger cars, marking a 15% increase from February and a 23.1% year-over-year rise.

BYD's production capabilities are also ramping up fast. The company manufactured 395,091 vehicles in March — a 33% jump from the same month last year. Exports reached a monthly high of 72,723 units, up 90% year-over-year and 8.5% over February. In total, Q1 exports surged to 206,084 vehicles, a staggering 111% increase compared to Q1 2024.

The Dynasty and Ocean series continued to dominate with 350,615 units sold in March alone. Denza and Fang Cheng Bao showed robust growth (+22.8% and +126% YoY, respectively), while luxury brand Yangwang remained in its early rollout phase with 133 vehicles sold.

In terms of drivetrain preferences, plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) accounted for 569,710 units — a 76% YoY increase — while battery electric vehicles (BEVs) made up 416,388 units, growing 39%. Altogether, BYD's passenger vehicle sales for Q1 2025 reached 990,711 units — a 58.7% jump over Q1 2024.

This explosive growth is backed by a series of technological advancements and product launches. The BYD Han L features an active DiSus-Z suspension system and the “God's Eye” autonomous driving suite powered by three LiDAR sensors. These capabilities have even trickled down to the budget-friendly Seagull hatchback. Meanwhile, the flagship Yangwang U7 comes equipped with four electric motors producing a combined 1,287 hp.

BYD is also scaling its global footprint. In addition to exporting 66,336 vehicles in January to markets in Europe, South America, and Southeast Asia, the automaker signed a logistics deal with Italy’s Intergea to guarantee delivery of original parts within 48 hours starting in May. New overseas production facilities are also planned in Brazil, Turkey, Thailand, and Hungary.

Against a backdrop of declining sales for Tesla — expected to close the quarter with 378,000 units sold — BYD’s position as a global EV leader looks increasingly secure. With 1,000,804 total vehicles sold year-to-date, the company appears on track to hit its ambitious target of 5.5 million vehicles by year’s end.
