From Opel MAXX to Rocks: A Journey of Urban Mobility Innovation

Opel revisits its 1995 MAXX concept as it introduces the electric Rocks for drivers aged 15+. Discover the legacy of flexible, urban mobility.
Thirty years ago at the Geneva Motor Show, Opel introduced a concept that defied conventions. The MAXX, a modular microcar unveiled in 1995, showcased unprecedented flexibility, compactness, and innovation. Now, Opel reflects on that milestone by drawing a direct line to its modern successor — the fully electric Opel Rocks, designed for drivers as young as 15.
The MAXX stood out not just for its dimensions — a mere 2.97 meters long and 1.58 wide and tall — but for its pioneering structure. Borrowing from aviation, Opel used patented extruded aluminum profiles to create a modular cell, which became the foundation for a flexible vehicle architecture. Customers could easily modify the car’s configuration: convertible, pickup, or even an extended version. The interior could be updated after purchase, offering a car that grew with its owner.
Safety and efficiency were central. The MAXX featured a driver's airbag, ABS, and weighed just around 650 kg. Under the hood was a 1.0-liter three-cylinder engine — the first of its kind developed in Europe for potential mass production — with an impressive fuel economy of just 3.9 liters per 100 km. Although the MAXX never reached production, its engine later powered models like the Opel Corsa.
Fast forward to today: the Opel Rocks embodies many of MAXX’s principles, but with an electric twist. Built in Stellantis' Kenitra plant in Morocco, the Rocks is a light quadricycle offering up to 75 km of electric range and charging via a standard household socket. Its quirky features — including asymmetrical doors and basic smartphone integration — appeal to young urban drivers, especially those just entering the world of mobility.
Adoption is growing. In the Netherlands alone, around 1,200 units were sold in 2023, giving Opel a commanding 40% share of the microcar market. While niche for now, the concept of compact, low-emission personal transport is gaining relevance, particularly as cities push for greener alternatives. As history shows, visionary concepts like the MAXX may not always launch immediately — but they often lay the groundwork for future revolutions.
