BMW electric vehicle sales rose 26.4% in Q1 2025, with the i4 and iX models leading. Neue Klasse platform expected to drive further growth.

BMW is firmly steering toward an electric future. According to its latest earnings report, the German automaker saw a 26.4% increase in electric vehicle (EV) sales during the first quarter of 2025 compared to the same period last year. Overall BMW brand sales rose by 3.7%, while MINI posted a 9.5% gain.

The biggest contributor to BMW’s EV success was the i4 sedan, which sold 7,125 units — up 57% year-over-year. The iX SUV followed with 3,626 units sold, marking a 23.1% improvement. Not all models shared in the success: i5 sales dropped 15.2%, and the i7 flagship sedan fell 10.4%. However, the dip in i7 sales isn’t seen as critical, given the vehicle's aging design and niche appeal.

MINI had a strong showing, too, selling 6,976 vehicles, thanks largely to the arrival of the new, larger Countryman — the biggest MINI ever built — which has caught the attention of compact SUV buyers. The return of the classic Cooper two-door model also helped bolster sales.

What makes BMW’s Q1 performance stand out is that it came during a period traditionally marked by sluggish post-holiday spending. Nevertheless, the company achieved notable growth, underlining the strength of the EV market even during economic slowdowns.

Adding momentum to BMW’s strategy is the upcoming launch of the Neue Klasse platform, slated to begin production in the second half of 2025. It will underpin the next generation of BMW EVs, supporting rear- and all-wheel-drive configurations with power ranging from 270 to 1,341 horsepower. The platform will use sixth-generation cylindrical battery cells, offering a 30% improvement in both range and charging speed.

Yet, lithium supply looms as a potential bottleneck. According to S&P Global, the global lithium surplus is expected to shrink significantly in 2025, which could affect production costs and timelines for electric vehicles.

BMW’s electrification drive is clearly accelerating. If the Neue Klasse rollout aligns with consumer demand and material availability, next year could see not just growth — but a breakthrough.
