How Skoda’s 4x4 System Improves Safety and Driving Feel

All-wheel drive in Skoda vehicles is no longer a niche solution reserved for demanding routes. Today, it is seen as a versatile tool that supports both safety and driving enjoyment, whether on winter roads or closed circuits.

The primary role of the 4×4 system is to maintain maximum traction. This is achieved through intelligent torque distribution between the axles. The control unit continuously evaluates wheel speed, steering angle, and both longitudinal and lateral acceleration, making adjustments within milliseconds. For the driver, these processes remain largely invisible, yet they shape a strong sense of confidence behind the wheel.

Depending on the drivetrain, Skoda applies two different all-wheel-drive concepts. Models with internal combustion engines rely on an inter-axle clutch that engages the rear axle when required. In the electric Enyaq and Elroq, there is no physical connection between the axles at all. Each axle is powered by its own electric motor, coordinated electronically to ensure efficient and stable performance. In both cases, the setup subtly favors the rear axle, contributing to balanced handling.

Ride comfort and stability are further enhanced by a multi-link rear axle, fitted to all-wheel-drive versions. This suspension layout improves wheel control and helps the vehicle remain composed, even on uneven surfaces or during longer journeys.

SUV models are equipped with an Offroad mode, designed for more challenging conditions. By adapting the behavior of ABS, traction control, and other systems, the car can handle snow, mud, or rough terrain more effectively. The mode operates at speeds of up to 30 km/h and is complemented by hill descent assistance, which automatically maintains a controlled speed on slippery downhill sections.

All-wheel drive also adds a layer of driving pleasure. With sport-oriented stability settings activated, the vehicle delivers quick responses and predictable balance, clearly signaling when the limits are being approached. This dynamic character is intended for closed tracks, where precision and control can be explored safely.

All-wheel drive is available across the Karoq, Octavia, Superb, Kodiaq, Enyaq, and Elroq ranges, while the RS versions of the Enyaq, Elroq, and Kodiaq feature it as standard. Judging by its current role, Skoda is likely to continue refining this technology as a key element of its lineup, combining safety, comfort, and engaging handling.
