BMW Group Plant Regensburg Celebrates 40 Years With Record Production
BMW Group reports record production at its Regensburg plant in 2025 as the site marks 40 years, leads BMW’s European output and expands electrified vehicles.
BMW Group Plant Regensburg is marking its 40th anniversary against the backdrop of a record-breaking year. In 2025, the plant produced 356,901 vehicles, the highest annual output in its history and the largest volume of any BMW Group car plant in Europe.
Since series production began in 1986, a total of 8.7 million vehicles have rolled off the assembly line in Regensburg. The strong performance in 2025 once again made the plant a key contributor to BMW Group’s overall output in Germany, where total vehicle production exceeded one million units.
The site currently operates around the clock in a three-shift system. Every 57 seconds, a new vehicle leaves the assembly line, resulting in more than 1,400 cars produced per working day. Production in 2025 was dominated by the BMW X1 and BMW X2, with more than 150,000 electrified vehicles — either fully electric or plug-in hybrids — built at the plant. Over half of the vehicles were delivered to customers in other European countries, while more than 100,000 units were shipped overseas.
Continuous efforts to improve competitiveness have played a decisive role in this development. Since 2019, the plant has reduced its production costs by more than 25 percent. Digitalisation has been a major lever, with artificial intelligence used in paint shop processes and quality inspections, cloud-based logistics systems, and autonomous vehicle movement from the assembly line to the loading area.
Regensburg stands out for its highly flexible production system. Different drivetrain variants — from internal combustion engines to plug-in hybrids and fully electric vehicles — are manufactured on a single production line. This flexibility allows the plant to respond quickly to changing market demand and customer preferences.
The plant remains a major economic driver for eastern Bavaria. Together with the nearby Wackersdorf site, it employs around 9,000 people, including approximately 380 apprentices. Over four decades, Regensburg has evolved from a regional industrial project into one of BMW Group’s most important production hubs in Europe.
As it enters its anniversary year, the plant is looking ahead with confidence. Aligned with the BMW iFACTORY strategy, Regensburg continues to focus on efficiency, digitalisation and competitiveness, while preparing for the ramp-up of the next-generation Neue Klasse models in the second half of the decade.
