Mercedes enters the 2025 Bahrain GP aiming to showcase W16 progress, with rookie Frederik Vesti replacing George Russell in FP1. Read the full preview now.

Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team heads into the Bahrain Grand Prix with determination and a crucial test of their 2025 progress. After a disappointing weekend in Japan — where strong pace failed to translate into qualifying results — the team is aiming for a cleaner execution under the desert sun.

Team Principal Toto Wolff acknowledged the W16’s clear potential but emphasized that poor implementation has cost them key results. At Suzuka, the team struggled with limited overtaking opportunities. Now, they face a different challenge: Bahrain’s abrasive surface, high rear-tire degradation, and scorching temperatures will push the car’s limits.

All eyes will be on Frederik Vesti during Friday’s first practice session. The Danish reserve driver will step in for George Russell as part of Mercedes’ mandatory rookie programme. Having accumulated extensive mileage in the W16 simulator, Vesti will now take his development work to the racetrack — his third FP1 outing after appearances in Mexico and Abu Dhabi in 2023.

In the standings, Mercedes holds second place in the Constructors’ Championship, trailing McLaren by 36 points. Russell sits fourth among drivers, while rookie Kimi Antonelli has impressed with fifth place so far. McLaren remains the benchmark, both in points and consistency, while Max Verstappen continues to mount pressure after a dominant victory in Japan.

Ferrari, meanwhile, is battling car balance issues. Lewis Hamilton cited problems with rear stability and overall pace. Updates — including a revised floor — are expected for Bahrain, though the team warns improvements might not be immediate.

Weather will add another variable. Forecasts predict temperatures up to 35°C, low humidity, and strong gusts of wind — conditions that will challenge both setup and tire management.

Pirelli has brought its hardest compounds — C1, C2, and C3 — anticipating significant degradation. A two-stop strategy is likely to dominate on Sunday.

Heading into the weekend, Mercedes maintains cautious optimism. The car has promise. The drivers are motivated. But to fight for the podium, the team must minimize the mistakes that proved costly in Japan.
