Porsche commits to remanufacturing components for sustainability and longevity

Porsche boosts sustainability by integrating remanufacturing into vehicle development, reducing emissions and conserving resources.
As part of its sustainability strategy, Porsche is expanding its efforts to recondition defective vehicle components into fully functional spare parts. The practice, known as remanufacturing, is evolving from a supplementary measure to a central aspect of vehicle development at the company.
This is no ordinary repair job — remanufactured parts must meet the same quality and safety standards as brand-new ones. Currently, around 20 component groups are included in the program, including gearboxes, alternators, starters, and navigation systems. The process involves collecting defective parts from dealers worldwide, storing them at a central warehouse in Sachsenheim, and sending them to specialized remanufacturing facilities. There, the components are carefully disassembled, cleaned, tested, and rebuilt, with only unusable elements replaced by new ones.
Albrecht Reimold, Member of the Executive Board for Production and Logistics at Porsche, highlighted that the initiative helps reduce environmental impact while ensuring long-term spare part availability, especially for classic and vintage models.
Porsche now aims to build remanufacturing capability into the design phase of future models. This forward-looking approach could significantly increase the number of parts suitable for remanufacturing. Among the new candidates are headlights, spoiler actuators, charging flaps, and various electronic control units.
According to Porsche’s own estimates, remanufactured parts can lead to greenhouse gas emission reductions of up to 50% and material savings of up to 80% compared to producing new parts. While exact figures on the volume of remanufactured components are not publicly disclosed, the move fits seamlessly into the company’s broader circular economy ambitions.
The parts undergo the same rigorous testing as new ones, ensuring uncompromised quality. With over 650 global dealerships, Porsche’s international network supports the efficient collection and redistribution of these remanufactured components back into the supply chain.
