Tesla has announced a recall of more than 376,000 electric vehicles in the United States due to a potential issue with the power steering system. The recall affects specific Model 3 and Model Y vehicles produced between February and October 2023. The problem lies in the steering system’s circuit boards, which may experience excessive stress, particularly during stop-and-go situations. This could lead to a temporary failure of the power steering, requiring drivers to exert more effort to steer the vehicle, thereby increasing the risk of accidents.
So far, no accidents or injuries related to this issue have been reported. Tesla has released a software update (version 2023.38.4 or later) that addresses the problem. The update is available remotely and does not require a visit to a service center. Owners who do not receive the update automatically are advised to contact Tesla support.
This is not the first time Tesla has issued recalls related to steering issues. In 2018, the company recalled more than 123,000 Model S vehicles due to corrosion of power steering bolts. In 2020, nearly 50,000 vehicles in China were recalled because of suspension problems. Most recently, in December 2023, Tesla recalled vehicles equipped with the Autosteer feature due to insufficient driver oversight.
