Russell and Antonelli qualify strong for Bahrain GP despite grid penalties. Mercedes aims for podium as tire strategy becomes key.

The second qualifying session of the 2025 Formula 1 season in Bahrain brought both satisfaction and slight frustration for Mercedes. George Russell and Kimi Antonelli stormed into Q3, setting the second and fourth fastest times respectively. However, both were handed one-place grid penalties for a pit lane infringement, dropping them to P3 and P5 for Sunday’s race.

The penalty stemmed from the team releasing their cars into the fast lane before the session officially resumed after a red flag in Q2. Despite the setback, both drivers showcased impressive pace. Russell admitted he found his rhythm only in Q3, where his lap of 1:30.009 was just 0.168 seconds off pole-sitter Oscar Piastri’s time of 1:29.841 for McLaren.

Antonelli recovered well after having his first Q3 lap deleted for track limits. He delivered under pressure, securing his best starting position of the season. After finishing fourth in Melbourne and 11th in Bahrain, the rookie appears to be gaining confidence with every session.

Scorching temperatures during FP3 made it difficult to assess performance, with tire overheating and a change in wind direction complicating car setup. However, as the evening cooled, Mercedes found balance again. Trackside Engineering Director Andrew Shovlin noted improved grip and a smaller gap to McLaren.

McLaren’s tire management remains a benchmark, a crucial factor for race day at Sakhir. Still, with both Russell and Antonelli in promising positions and race strategy yet to unfold, Mercedes is eyeing a podium challenge. While victory might be a stretch, Sunday’s race will be a key test of the team’s evolving form.
