A 1965 Porsche 356SC Cabriolet is currently offered on Bring a Trailer, with bidding at $60,000 and the auction scheduled to end on February 20. Even before the hammer falls, the car has sparked discussion among commenters, particularly regarding specification details, originality, and documentation.
This example represents the final evolution of the 356 line, the 356C series produced for 1964–1965. The “C” generation introduced factory four-wheel disc brakes, marking a significant technical step for the model. Within that series, the “SC” designation identifies the more powerful 1600SC engine configuration offered by Porsche at the time.
The car was acquired by the current owner in 2012 and was refurbished in the 1990s, including a repaint in Slate Gray. In 2025, substantial mechanical work was carried out: resealing of the 1.6-liter flat-four engine, the four-speed manual transaxle, and the steering box, along with replacement of the clutch and pressure plate, axle boots, fuel pump, rear brake pads, and spark plugs. Previous service included overhauled brake calipers, replacement front brake hoses, distributor refresh, and installation of a replacement fuel tank. For collectors, a clearly documented round of recent mechanical attention often plays a decisive role.
The body was built by Reutter, Porsche’s long-time coachbuilding partner for the 356. Equipment includes 15-inch steel wheels with hubcaps, a black soft top, black leather upholstery, and VDO instrumentation featuring a centrally mounted tachometer with a 6,000-rpm redline. The five-digit odometer shows approximately 7,000 miles, though total mileage is unknown.
The listing notes a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, and the engine stamping is shown as corresponding to the number listed on the certificate. In the comment section, the seller confirms matching engine and transmission. At the same time, discussion has focused on the dashboard finish, which is painted black rather than body color—a point of interest given the Slate Gray exterior.
The car is titled using serial number 161037 as shown on a reproduction Porsche Karosserie tag, a detail that naturally draws attention in the context of classic car documentation and identification.
As one of the final iterations of the 356, the 356SC Cabriolet occupies a distinct place in Porsche history, bridging the pre-911 era with the company’s later evolution. Market results for comparable SC cabriolets indicate sustained interest in this specification. With several days remaining in the auction, the current bid leaves room for movement as buyers weigh documentation, recent mechanical work, and overall presentation.
