Maserati has secured a notable recognition in the U.S. market: the GranTurismo coupe and GranCabrio convertible have been named to the Car and Driver Editors’ Choice 2026 list in the Luxury Sports Car segment. For the Trident brand, this is more than a headline — it means inclusion in the annual roster of vehicles that one of the industry’s most influential publications considers benchmark offerings in their respective classes.

Car and Driver compiles its Editors’ Choice through a comprehensive evaluation process. Instrumented testing measures acceleration, braking distances, cornering grip, and interior sound levels, while real-world driving assesses practical metrics such as highway fuel economy and, in the case of EVs, driving range. Only vehicles earning a rating of at least 9 out of 10 qualify. For 2026, the list includes 131 honorees across 47 segments, selected from roughly 450 tested models.

The GranTurismo and GranCabrio are recognized specifically in the Luxury Sports Car category. Maserati emphasizes their dual character: genuine sports cars engineered for performance, yet refined enough for long-distance comfort. Designed and developed in Italy, both models reflect the brand’s longstanding grand touring tradition, where style and engineering are closely intertwined.

In Trofeo specification, the spotlight falls on Maserati’s in-house twin-turbo Nettuno V6, featuring a pre-chamber combustion system derived from Formula 1 technology. The layout employs a dedicated pre-chamber and twin-spark configuration to optimize the combustion process. For the GranCabrio Trofeo, output is rated at up to 550 CV and 650 Nm of torque, enabling a 0–100 km/h sprint in 3.6 seconds and a top speed of 316 km/h.

For the 2026 model year, a new Sports Exhaust system becomes standard on all internal combustion GranTurismo and GranCabrio Trofeo variants. Described by Maserati as the Trident’s “new voice,” the system underscores the emotional dimension of these grand tourers, reinforcing the connection between engineering and sound.

The announcement also aligns with Maserati’s broader narrative around personalization and heritage. Through the Maserati Fuoriserie program, two one-off creations — the GranTurismo Meccanica Lirica and GranCabrio Meccanica Lirica — showcase exclusive finishes such as Rosso Velluto and Oro Lirico paint, 21-inch Crio wheels with matte gold accents, bespoke exhaust detailing, and interiors combining leather and Alcantara. Inspired by these cars, a Meccanica Lirica Pack is now available across the range, including the fully electric Folgore versions, adapted to their specific architecture.

Production of the GranTurismo and GranCabrio is set to return to Maserati’s historic Viale Ciro Menotti facility in Modena from late 2025. Symbolically, the move brings the grand tourers back to the brand’s home base, alongside other flagship projects developed and built there.

Taken together, the Editors’ Choice recognition highlights the competitive standing of the GranTurismo and GranCabrio in the luxury sports car arena — while also reinforcing Maserati’s ongoing focus on engineering identity, sound character, and a renewed connection to its Modena roots.
