Rivian Updates EDV Electric Van With AWD and 550 km Range
Rivian has confirmed an EDV electric delivery van upgrade with all-wheel drive and up to 550 km range, strengthening its position in commercial logistics.
Rivian is reinforcing its commercial vehicle strategy by upgrading its electric delivery van, the EDV — a model that has quietly become one of the company’s most strategically important assets. While public attention often centers on the R1 lineup and the upcoming R2 family, it is the steady stream of commercial orders, primarily from Amazon, that has underpinned the company’s operational stability.
The manufacturer has now confirmed a significant update: alongside the existing front-wheel-drive configuration, new versions will introduce a larger battery pack and all-wheel drive. According to the company, the extended battery is expected to increase range by roughly 30 percent. In practical terms, that translates to approximately up to 550 kilometers, positioning the van among the longest-range electric vehicles in its segment.
All-wheel drive is more than a technical addition. It directly addresses the operational demands of fleet operators, particularly in regions with challenging weather and road conditions. Improved traction in snow, heavy rain and on uneven surfaces has been a recurring priority for logistics companies, especially in European markets.
Rivian currently produces the van in 500 and 700 variants. The existing production configuration features a single-motor front-wheel-drive system delivering 320 horsepower (235 kW) and 405 Nm of torque, with a payload capacity exceeding one metric ton. The more compact EDV 500 is already in service with Amazon in Germany, including operations in Munich, Berlin and Düsseldorf, demonstrating the vehicle’s adaptation to European urban environments.
The commercial significance of the EDV extends beyond a single partnership. Amazon placed an order for 100,000 vans, and by early 2025 approximately 20,000 units were operating in the United States. Following the end of the exclusivity period, Rivian opened sales to additional corporate clients, with HelloFresh becoming one of the first major fleet customers to deploy Rivian commercial vans.
Precise technical specifications for the new all-wheel-drive and extended-range versions have not yet been published. Nevertheless, the expansion of the lineup signals that Rivian sees the commercial EV segment as a long-term pillar of its business. In a competitive field that includes the Ford E-Transit, Mercedes-Benz eSprinter and BrightDrop Zevo, a combination of extended range and enhanced traction could further strengthen the brand’s position in the global delivery market.
