Porsche AG and Frauscher unveil the 850 Fantom Air, an electric sports boat using Macan Turbo components and 800-volt tech. Discover key details and awards.

Porsche is pushing the boundaries of where its electric technology can go — and this time, not on the road, but on the water. Together with Porsche Engineering, Studio F. A. Porsche and Austrian boatbuilder Frauscher, Porsche AG has developed a project that may look like an ambitious experiment, yet signals a much broader technological direction. The result is the Frauscher x Porsche 850 Fantom Air, a fully electric sports boat that draws heavily on standard powertrain components from the Porsche Macan Turbo.

The central idea is clear: transfer Porsche’s expertise in electric drivetrains and control systems from automotive engineering into the marine sector. At the heart of the boat is an 800-volt architecture, combined with a latest-generation permanently excited synchronous motor (PSM) delivering up to 400 kW. Power comes from a high-voltage lithium-ion battery with a total capacity of around 100 kWh. In the context of a performance boat, those numbers underline that Porsche is treating marine mobility as a serious platform for its electric technology, rather than a one-off showcase.

Porsche notes that transferring car components to a boat is far from a simple “plug-and-play” process. Life on the water brings fundamentally different demands: high continuous loads instead of short bursts of acceleration, stricter cooling requirements, constant vibration from waves, and exposure to harsh environments such as salt water. Engineers therefore adapted the powertrain to marine standards, revised the packaging inside the hull, and reduced the electrical architecture to the essentials, supported by additional control modules tailored for the application.

Beyond the technical work, the project was designed to feel unmistakably like a Porsche. The boat features driving profiles familiar from the automotive world — Docking, Range, Sport and Sport Plus — and incorporates controls and interface elements intended to give Porsche drivers an instantly recognizable experience. This approach turns the Fantom Air into more than an engineering exercise, positioning it as a product with its own identity.

In performance terms, the Frauscher x Porsche 850 Fantom Air reaches up to 85 km/h, placing it firmly among genuine sports boats. Electric propulsion delivers immediate response and strong acceleration while remaining far quieter than traditional petrol or diesel setups, adding a distinctive character to the overall driving experience on the water.

Charging capability is another area where Porsche’s automotive background becomes visible. The boat supports DC fast charging above 250 kW, and under ideal conditions can recharge from 10 to 80 percent in well under 30 minutes. For standard infrastructure, AC charging is also available through an onboard 11 kW charger.

Built on the Frauscher hull platform, the 850 Fantom Air is designed to carry up to nine passengers. Its dimensions underline its role as a compact yet capable day cruiser, measuring 8.67 metres in length and 2.49 metres in width.

The project has already gained recognition within the boating industry. The Frauscher x Porsche 850 Fantom Air received the Best of Boats Award 2024 in the Best Electric category and was later named Powerboat of the Year 2025 in the Electric category. For Porsche, these awards represent more than prestige — they highlight that its electric technology can compete beyond the automotive market.

The collaboration is continuing to expand. At boot Düsseldorf 2026, Porsche and Frauscher presented the Frauscher x Porsche 790 Spectre, a newly developed sports boat engineered entirely around the fully electric powertrain of the Porsche Macan. The move suggests the partnership is evolving into a broader product strategy rather than remaining a single standout project.

If this trajectory continues, initiatives like Frauscher x Porsche could offer a glimpse into how major car manufacturers may extend their influence into adjacent mobility sectors. For Porsche, the Fantom Air is not just about electrification — it is a statement that the brand’s performance identity can carry across from asphalt to open water.
