Volkswagen Polo Turns 50: A Miniature Train Pays Homage in Hamburg

Volkswagen marks 50 years of Polo with a miniature train exhibit in Miniatur Wunderland. Explore its legacy and anniversary celebrations.
A very special train now winds its way through the intricate miniature landscapes of Hamburg’s Miniatur Wunderland. Onboard are over 70 scale models of the Volkswagen Polo — one of the brand’s most iconic cars — displayed on 12 carriages at 1:87 scale. It’s a tribute to the Polo’s 50th anniversary, celebrating five decades of compact legacy with attention to both detail and symbolism.
This installation is part of Volkswagen’s anniversary campaign themed “Even small can be big,” and the choice of location is no coincidence. Miniatur Wunderland is not just a popular tourist attraction — it’s a cultural symbol that embodies precision, creativity, and emotional storytelling. These are values that the Polo has represented since its debut in 1975.
Branded with the “50 Years of Polo” logo, the train journeys through a miniature Hamburg, past landmarks like the Elbphilharmonie, the port, and the city’s bridges. Even the stations along the route are decorated with commemorative billboards. Though technical details of the model train’s construction remain undisclosed, creating such intricate displays typically requires several weeks or even months of meticulous work by Wunderland’s team.
Beyond the exhibit, Volkswagen has launched a social media campaign under the hashtag #50JahrePolo, inviting fans to share personal memories with the model. However, as of now, no special edition Polo has been officially announced to mark the anniversary.
Volkswagen representatives highlight the symbolic role of the car: “Polo represents reliable mobility across generations.” In this light, Miniatur Wunderland becomes a fitting metaphor for the journey the Polo has taken — and continues to take — through German automotive culture.
Visitors have embraced the new addition with enthusiasm. Social media comments reflect a mix of excitement and nostalgia, and the tiny Polo train has quickly become one of the most talked-about attractions in the exhibition. As it turns 50, the small hatchback once again proves its big place in history.
