New Volvo XC70 unveiled as extended-range plug-in hybrid SUV

Volvo introduces the XC70 plug-in hybrid with a 200 km electric range. Built on SMA platform, it launches in China in 2025 with fast charging and modern design.
Volvo is entering a new phase of electrification with the unveiling of the XC70, its first extended-range plug-in hybrid SUV. Designed for the Chinese market, the new mid-size XC70 promises a pure electric driving range of up to 200 kilometers — the longest of any Volvo hybrid to date.
Built on the new Scalable Modular Architecture (SMA), the XC70 is Volvo’s answer to increasing demand for longer-range hybrid vehicles in China. According to Håkan Samuelsson, President and CEO of Volvo Cars, the model serves as “a perfect bridge to full electrification” and reflects the company’s focus on regional adaptation and consumer needs.
The plug-in hybrid system allows for emission-free daily commuting, while a combustion engine supports extended travel. Fast-charging capabilities — 10% to 80% in just 33 minutes — offer convenience for urban lifestyles. These figures place the XC70 well ahead of rivals like the BMW X5 xDrive50e and Toyota RAV4 Prime, which deliver less than 70 km of electric range.
From a design perspective, the XC70 combines Volvo’s clean Scandinavian style with bold updates. Features include a shield-like closed grille with active shutters and upgraded Matrix LED headlights. These not only enhance visual appeal but also contribute to aerodynamics and safety.
The name XC70 may be familiar — Volvo previously used it for a rugged station wagon that was discontinued in 2016. The 2025 version reinvents that spirit in a modern SUV format, slightly larger and roomier than the XC60, and targeted at families seeking both adventure and everyday functionality.
Volvo plans to open orders for the new XC70 in China during the second half of 2025. As for global availability, the company remains cautious, only stating that additional markets are being considered for the future.
