Mercedes brings W16 upgrades for 2025 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix

Mercedes introduces updates for the W16 at Imola as F1 enters its European leg. Antonelli races at home; Russell eyes top results. Weather and tyres add intrigue.
The Emilia Romagna Grand Prix this year is more than just the start of Formula 1’s European leg — it wraps up the first quarter of the season and sets the tone for the months ahead. For Mercedes, Imola is a chance to reinforce their momentum and take the next step forward in their fight at the top.
Toto Wolff has been clear: the W16 has brought better balance compared to its predecessor, and it’s paid off — four podiums in six races. But it’s not enough to win. With the European phase now underway, Mercedes is rolling out a series of upgrades, the first of which debuts this weekend. These updates aren’t radical but are aimed at building consistent performance — gradually, race by race.
While Mercedes is steadily evolving, rivals like McLaren and Red Bull are holding their ground. That makes the Italian round especially revealing, as Imola often serves as a litmus test for true competitive pace. George Russell has shown consistency in the top five and currently sits fourth in the standings, yet still lacks the race-winning edge. Whether Imola marks a turning point depends on how effective the upgrades prove to be.
For Kimi Antonelli, the weekend is uniquely personal. The young driver, born and raised in Bologna, is racing at home for the first time in F1. Still early in his rookie season, Antonelli is gaining experience with every session — and racing in front of a home crowd could bring an extra burst of motivation.
The track itself has evolved too. Following past safety concerns, gravel traps have been reintroduced at Piratella, Acque Minerali, and Variante Alta. These changes aim to enforce track limits more strictly and will challenge drivers to be more precise. Add to this the first use of the C6 tyre compound this season, and the stage is set for unpredictable developments.
It’s also impossible to forget the 2023 flood that forced the cancellation of the race. Though the weather forecast looks more favourable this time, the memory of last year adds weight and poignancy to this weekend’s return.
The European stretch is just beginning, but the stakes are already rising. Imola may deliver answers — and raise new questions.
