How Skoda RS Models Balance Sportiness with Everyday Usability

Discover how Skoda tunes its RS models like Octavia and Kodiaq to deliver sporty performance and daily comfort, combining smart chassis and engine design.
Sporty DNA in Skoda's RS models is not just about acceleration and red brake calipers. Behind the RS (Rallye Sport) badge lies an engineering philosophy that balances adrenaline and everyday usability. This approach dates back a quarter of a century and has roots in legendary 1970s prototypes like the 180 RS and 130 RS. Today, it continues in models such as the Octavia RS, Kodiaq RS, and fully electric Elroq RS and Enyaq RS.
At first glance, the Octavia RS and Kodiaq RS seem closely related. Both feature the 2.0 TSI petrol engine delivering 195 kW (265 hp), a seven-speed DSG gearbox, and numerous sporty adjustments. Yet under the hood and chassis, they follow different paths. The Octavia RS uses front-wheel drive enhanced by a VAQ electronically controlled differential, delivering precision through corners. The Kodiaq RS adopts fifth-generation Haldex all-wheel drive, capable of transferring up to 100% torque to the rear axle—ideal for rough terrain or towing.
Engineers didn’t aim for stiffness just for the sake of it. On the contrary, as Petr Sulc from Skoda’s Technical Development department emphasizes, balance is key. The Octavia RS uses shortened springs and firmer stabilizers to lower the body by 15 mm. Optional DCC adaptive dampers allow fine-tuning suspension firmness across 15 levels—from Comfort to Sport. Meanwhile, the Kodiaq RS features the advanced DCC+ system, which regulates both compression and rebound separately, smoothing out broken asphalt with ease.
It’s not just about dynamics—sound plays a part too. The Octavia RS is fitted with a new sports exhaust system, while the Kodiaq RS adds Dynamic Sound Boost, offering a distinctive growl even at low revs. Complemented by progressive steering, large ventilated brake discs, and high-grip tires, these are trademarks of the RS family.
What about electric models? The RS philosophy charges ahead into the future. The Elroq RS and Enyaq RS feature twin electric motors delivering smart all-wheel drive and striking performance, underpinned by specially tuned chassis systems.
In this lineup, power is only one piece of the puzzle. The true value of RS lies in the engineering finesse that makes every drive enjoyable—without sacrificing comfort or everyday practicality.
