Mercedes-Benz to premiere new electric VLE van in Stuttgart
Mercedes-Benz announced the upcoming world premiere of the all-new electric VLE in Stuttgart. Learn what is known about the new VAN.EA-based MPV ahead of its debut.
The world premiere of the new electric Mercedes-Benz VLE will take place on 10 March 2026 in Stuttgart, with the company inviting viewers around the world to watch the presentation via an online livestream. For Mercedes-Benz Vans, the launch marks more than the introduction of a new model — it signals the beginning of a new technological era for the brand’s van lineup.
The VLE is positioned as something different from a traditional electric minivan. Mercedes-Benz describes it as the start of a new segment, referring to the vehicle as a “grand limousine” among MPVs. The concept combines the comfort and ride quality associated with luxury sedans with the versatility and space of a multi-purpose vehicle, creating a format the company believes will expand the boundaries of the segment.
At the core of the vehicle lies the new VAN.EA (Van Electric Architecture), a modular platform developed specifically for the next generation of electric vans and passenger MPVs. The architecture consists of three main modules: a front drive unit, a central section housing the battery pack, and a rear module that can optionally include an additional electric motor. This structure allows the platform to scale in length and configuration while supporting different battery sizes and drivetrain layouts.
Mercedes-Benz says the architecture is designed to clearly separate future models into two directions: private passenger vehicles and commercial vans. Within the passenger segment, the VLE will become one of the core models. It will later be joined by the VLS, a more luxurious variant positioned at the top end of the lineup.
The VLE itself is conceived as a highly adaptable vehicle. Its interior offers up to eight seats, and the configuration is intended to suit a wide range of uses — from a family vehicle to a leisure companion or an exclusive premium shuttle. Flexibility of use is presented as one of the defining characteristics of the model.
Development testing has already included extensive real-world trials. During one long-distance test drive, a prototype VLE covered nearly 1,100 kilometers from Stuttgart to Rome with only two short charging stops. Engineers used the journey to analyze electric powertrain performance, energy recuperation and battery thermal management. Additional testing took place at the high-speed Nardò proving ground in Italy, where the team evaluated vehicle dynamics and efficiency at higher speeds.
Preparation for production is already underway at Mercedes-Benz’s plant in Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain, where pre-series manufacturing of the VLE has begun. The factory remains a central hub for the company’s van production and currently builds models such as the V-Class, Vito and the electric EQV. In the future, the site will gradually transition to producing new electric vehicles based on the VAN.EA platform.
In this sense, the upcoming premiere of the VLE represents more than the arrival of a single vehicle. It marks a significant step in the transformation of Mercedes-Benz Vans, combining a new electric architecture, a restructured model lineup and a stronger focus on premium passenger MPVs.
