Opel marks 50 years since the launch of the Kadett City, a 1975 hatchback that set the stage for today’s Astra with practical design and versatility.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of one of Opel’s most distinctive models — the Kadett City. First introduced in 1975 as an urban hatchback aimed at young families, the compact car quickly gained popularity for its blend of practicality, maneuverability, and bold design.

Technically, the Kadett City wasn’t revolutionary, but its balance and attention to everyday usability made it stand out among competitors. The rear-wheel drive layout, paired with a range of four-cylinder engines from 1.0 to 1.6 liters — including a version with automatic transmission — offered users versatile options. One of the car’s most praised features was its newly engineered gas-spring-supported tailgate. It allowed for effortless loading and a flat cargo floor, a feature that resonated with families and professionals alike. Opel, at the time, described it as ideal “for young families and city dwellers looking for a compact yet multi-purpose vehicle.”

Design played a significant role as well. The sloping rear end, large window surfaces, and — in later versions — 13-inch alloy wheels gave the Kadett City a sporty character. These elements, combined with a thoughtfully arranged interior, shaped the car’s dynamic image, even if its performance figures were modest.

The model peaked in popularity by the late 1970s. In 1979, production of the Kadett C range came to an end — these were the last Opel compact cars to use rear-wheel drive. That same year, Opel introduced the front-wheel-drive Kadett D, signaling a new era in its lineup.

Today, Opel embraces its legacy through the current Astra, produced in Rüsselsheim. Like its predecessor, the Astra offers a mix of practicality and smart design, now enhanced with cutting-edge technologies and a broad range of drivetrain options — from traditional combustion engines to plug-in and fully electric versions.

The Kadett City’s anniversary is more than a nostalgic moment; it highlights the evolution of Opel’s values in the compact segment. From the mechanical simplicity of the 1970s to the sustainable efficiency of today — it’s a journey worth celebrating.
