Mercedes aims to assess its updated front wing at the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona, targeting improved performance after recent setbacks.

The Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS team returns to Barcelona with hopes of shifting the momentum of the season. After two challenging races in Miami and Monaco, the Brackley squad is looking to use the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya not just as a Grand Prix venue but as a key testing ground for their recent technical updates.

Team Principal Toto Wolff has acknowledged the need to regain stability. “Barcelona is a great test for a car. It offers everything: a mix of corners, long straights, and a tricky final sector where balance really matters,” he stated. Particular focus will be on the updated front wing, now compliant with the latest FIA technical directive. This new rule tightens the limits on aerodynamic flexibility, forcing Mercedes to abandon their previous “legal slot” design that had delivered aerodynamic gains without breaking the rules.

But Mercedes is not alone in bringing upgrades. Ferrari, McLaren, and Red Bull are all expected to introduce changes in Barcelona, potentially reshaping the competitive landscape. In such a scenario, success will depend not only on who has the best package but also on who adapts fastest to the altered track conditions.

Since 2023, the final chicane at Barcelona has been removed, allowing for high-speed entries into the last two corners. This revision has intensified the strain on tyres and increased the aerodynamic demands in the final sector. Drivers will have to strike a delicate balance between outright speed and tyre management, particularly over race distance.

Among those determined to bounce back is George Russell. After a frustrating strategy call cost him points in Monaco, he’s eager to get back into the mix. Rookie Kimi Antonelli is also looking for a cleaner weekend after a tough run so far.

Meanwhile, Mercedes’ junior programme has eyes on Noah Strømsted. After a podium finish in Imola during his rookie Formula 3 season, he heads to a familiar circuit—Barcelona was the site of this year’s pre-season testing. “It’ll be tight because everyone knows the layout, but we’re ready,” Strømsted noted.

The weather looks promising, with dry and sunny conditions expected throughout the weekend. With temperatures around 25°C and no rain in sight, the spotlight will be on car performance and who can best capitalize on their upgrades.
