Ram Introduces the 2027 ProMaster City Commercial Van
Ram revealed the 2027 ProMaster City midsize commercial van with 167 cu. ft. cargo space, 1.6-liter turbo engine and a sub-$40,000 starting price. Learn the key details.
Ram has reintroduced a midsize commercial van to its lineup with the debut of the 2027 Ram ProMaster City, aiming to re-enter a segment that has recently thinned out in the United States. The new model returns after several years away from the market and is designed to offer small businesses a balance of maneuverability, cargo capacity and ownership cost.
The van is positioned as a versatile tool for urban work. According to Ram, it is intended for a wide range of tasks—from on-demand deliveries and transporting professional equipment to moving passengers. Engineers focused on maintaining compact dimensions suitable for dense city environments while significantly improving usable space.
The most notable change is the cargo area. The new ProMaster City offers more than 167 cubic feet of cargo volume with a 111-inch load floor, giving the van over nine feet of usable length. More than 48 inches between the rear wheel wells allows it to accommodate a standard U.S. pallet, and the layout is capable of carrying two pallets front to back, expanding its usefulness for logistics and construction work.
Practicality is emphasized throughout the design. A low step-in height of just over 23 inches simplifies loading, while the squared-off body sides maximize interior space. The near-vertical walls allow businesses to install shelving, storage modules or mobile workstations without wasting valuable cargo area.
Despite the larger cargo capacity, the van remains compact. Its overall height is under 80 inches, allowing it to enter most urban parking garages and structures. For businesses operating in crowded city centers, this compact profile is a crucial advantage.
The new model also brings improved hauling capability. Ram targets over 2,000 pounds of payload and approximately 2,000 pounds of towing capacity when equipped with the optional Class III hitch. For a van of this size, those figures provide flexibility for a wide range of commercial uses.
Power comes from a turbocharged 1.6-liter inline-four engine producing 166 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque. It is paired with an Aisin eight-speed automatic transmission and sends power to the front wheels. The front-wheel-drive layout helps maintain a flat cargo floor while improving traction in poor weather.
The chassis combines a MacPherson-strut front suspension with an independent trailing-arm rear setup. According to Ram, this configuration provides durability and stability under load while maintaining the ride comfort required for long workdays.
Inside the cabin, the ProMaster City introduces technology that is uncommon for vehicles in this segment. Standard equipment includes a 10-inch digital instrument cluster, a 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a digital rearview mirror designed to improve visibility when the cargo area is full.
The van also integrates a range of safety features, including forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, driver-attention monitoring, rear parking sensors and a rearview camera. Passenger Wagon versions add side-curtain airbags for the second and third rows.
Ram will offer the ProMaster City in Tradesman and SLT trims and in two body styles: Cargo Van and Passenger Wagon. The passenger configuration can seat five or eight occupants, and the rear seats can be removed to increase cargo space when needed.
Flexibility is another focus. The model offers six window and panel combinations, which together with multiple rear-door options create 11 possible configurations. This allows companies to tailor the van to delivery services, contractor work or passenger transport.
The new ProMaster City will be assembled at the TOFAS plant in Bursa, Turkey, with additional upfitting for the North American market performed at the Baltimore Transformation Center in the United States.
Orders are expected to open in the second half of 2026, with vehicles arriving at dealerships in the first quarter of 2027. Ram targets a starting price of under $40,000, positioning the van as one of the most accessible entry points in the commercial-van segment.
With several competitors having recently left the market, Ram appears to be betting that a practical, compact commercial van can once again find a strong audience among small businesses. If that bet pays off, the ProMaster City could quickly become one of the key players in a segment that is ready for a revival.
