Rolls-Royce unveils Cullinan Yachting, four Bespoke commissions inspired by yacht design, materials and heritage. Explore key details and design elements.

Rolls-Royce has unveiled four unique Cullinan motor cars, each created as a one-of-one commission and deeply rooted in the world of yachting—not as a stylistic gesture, but as an extension of the brand’s history and its clients’ lifestyles.

Cullinan Yachting is presented as a series of Private Commissions, where each vehicle is defined by one of the cardinal directions: North, South, East and West. This concept shapes every aspect of the project, from exterior finishes to interior details. The colour palette ranges from cool, light blues to darker tones evoking deep water and storm-lit skies, while a hand-painted compass motif highlights the specific direction assigned to each car.

The defining feature of these commissions lies not only in their visual identity but in their direct connection to maritime culture. The interiors incorporate Open Pore Teak, a material traditionally used on yacht decks for its durability and tactile qualities. Here, it serves as a functional and symbolic bridge between automotive design and marine craftsmanship. This is complemented by a marquetry compass composed of more than 40 individual wooden elements, as well as embroidery inspired by rope structures found in nautical rigging.

Hand-painted fascia artwork adds another layer of detail. Rolls-Royce artisans spent two months refining techniques to depict the wake of a tender moving across water. The composition is applied directly onto lacquer using airbrushing and hand-guided techniques, creating a sense of motion. The direction of the wake corresponds to the cardinal identity of each motor car, reinforcing the individuality of every commission.

Each vehicle is also equipped with a bespoke Starlight Headliner. Traditionally made from hundreds or thousands of fibre-optic points, this feature can replicate real star constellations. In Cullinan Yachting, however, the patterns are based on Mediterranean wind maps, introducing a dynamic interpretation of navigation and further anchoring the theme in a maritime context.

This project continues a broader design narrative within Rolls-Royce, where yachting has long served as a source of inspiration. Previous models such as Phantom Drophead Coupé and the highly exclusive Boat Tail—limited to just three examples—have explored similar themes, translating yacht design language into automotive form. Cullinan Yachting extends this approach into the SUV segment, which remains the brand’s most requested model.

The connection to the sea is not only contemporary but historical. Charles Rolls, co-founder of the marque, worked as a third engineer on his family’s yacht Santa Maria in the late 19th century, travelling across the Mediterranean. This heritage provides a direct link between the brand’s origins and its current design direction.

Projects like Cullinan Yachting also reflect a wider shift within Rolls-Royce. The company continues to expand its Bespoke capabilities, invest in production facilities and develop its global Private Office network. In this context, such commissions are not isolated creations but part of a broader strategy where each motor car becomes a tailored expression of its owner’s lifestyle—here, closely tied to the world of yachting.
