Volkswagen ID.3 GTX FIRE+ICE: electric tribute to a 1990s icon

Volkswagen launches ID.3 GTX FIRE+ICE in a 1990-unit run, blending electric power with retro design in partnership with BOGNER FIRE+ICE.
Volkswagen is reviving one of its most iconic chapters with the release of the ID.3 GTX FIRE+ICE, a limited-edition electric hatchback inspired by the legendary 1990 Golf II Fire and Ice. Just like over three decades ago, the project was developed in collaboration with the fashion brand BOGNER FIRE+ICE. Merging sporty aesthetics with modern electric performance, the result is a vehicle that balances style and substance.
Exactly 1,990 units will be produced, a nod to the year the original model debuted. Pricing starts at €56,020 in Germany, and sales have already begun outside the country, including in Belgium. This underscores not just the collector’s appeal of the edition but also its potential popularity across Europe.
Visually, the FIRE+ICE edition is unmistakable. The body is painted in an exclusive Ultra Violet Metallic hue that shifts from blue to deep violet depending on the light. Bold Flaming Red accents on the roof strip, emblems, and wheel hubs add flair, while fire-and-ice light projections on door entry introduce a touch of theatricality.
The interior reflects the same duality: the driver's side is wrapped in warm “On Fire Red,” while the passenger's side features cool “Keep Cool Blue.” The cabin includes quilted seat patterns inspired by BOGNER jackets, along with branded logos throughout, from the headrests to the floor mats.
Under the hood, the FIRE+ICE lives up to its looks. Two powertrain options are available: 210 kW (286 PS) and 240 kW (326 PS), both delivering 545 Nm of torque. Acceleration to 100 km/h takes as little as 5.7 seconds, with an electronically limited top speed of 200 km/h. A 79 kWh battery enables up to 591 km WLTP range and supports fast charging up to 185 kW — enough to go from 10% to 80% in just 26 minutes.
The standard equipment list is equally impressive: an Augmented Reality Head-Up Display, Harman Kardon audio system, sports seats with massage function, adaptive suspension (on the top variant), and a full suite of driver assistance features. This makes the FIRE+ICE not just a styling exercise, but a genuinely well-equipped premium EV.
Interestingly, the arrival of the FIRE+ICE edition comes just as Volkswagen introduces another anniversary model — the petrol-powered Golf GTI Edition 50, unveiled at the Nürburgring as the most powerful production GTI to date. Together, these models reflect VW’s commitment to blending nostalgia and innovation through limited editions, each offering a unique perspective on the brand’s future.
