Mercedes-Benz VLE shows aerodynamic, high-speed, and long-range performance

Mercedes-Benz VLE prototypes excel in aerodynamics, high-speed testing, and long-range trials. The electric van arrives in 2026 with VAN.EA architecture.
Mercedes-Benz is confidently moving toward a new era in its van history as the fully electric VLE has successfully completed a series of demanding tests, proving its efficiency across key disciplines. The prototypes demonstrated exceptional results in aerodynamic testing, high-speed track runs, and long-distance journeys, confirming readiness for mass production in 2026.
The tests began in Stuttgart’s wind tunnel, where the VLE’s stretched roofline and rounded rear achieved an impressively low drag coefficient even under strong wind conditions. Despite the heavy camouflage, the results confirmed that the streamlined design plays a crucial role in reducing energy consumption.
Next, engineers took the prototypes to the Nardò test track in Southern Italy to push the electric drivetrain to its limits. They fine-tuned energy recuperation, thermal management, and rear-axle steering to boost both efficiency and handling at high speeds. These optimizations are set to enhance stability during dynamic driving scenarios.
The third phase involved a long-distance drive from Stuttgart to Rome—nearly 1,100 kilometers with just two 15-minute charging stops. This demonstrated the vehicle’s practicality for extended journeys while maintaining a balance between comfort and efficiency. Additional test data confirms that the VAN.EA architecture will enable over 450 km of WLTP range and up to 400 kW of power, significantly surpassing current options in this segment.
At the core of this development is the new modular VAN.EA platform, which allows diverse configurations ranging from family-oriented and leisure models to luxury VIP shuttles and camper variants. Initial deliveries are expected to begin in 2026, targeting key markets including the United States, Canada, and China. Experts have already noted that the VLE could set new benchmarks in the electric van segment, offering a rare combination of long range, strong performance, and remarkable versatility.
