Porsche Cars North America presented the 911 GT3 S/C at Air|Water 2026 in California, marking its US debut alongside 800 cars and 75 years of Porsche motorsport. Learn more.
The Porsche 911 GT3 S/C made its US public debut at Air|Water 2026, marking a significant shift in the evolution of the GT lineup. For the first time, a GT3 model adopts an open-top format while retaining its naturally aspirated engine, manual transmission and uncompromising driver-focused philosophy.
The premiere took place in Costa Mesa, where Air|Water has established itself as a major gathering for the global Porsche community. More than 9,500 visitors and around 800 cars filled the OC Fair & Event Center, creating a setting that brought together classic icons and modern performance machines. Within this context, the GT3 S/C was presented not as an isolated novelty, but as part of a broader narrative connecting past and present.
This debut carries weight beyond a single model. The GT3 has long been regarded as the purest interpretation of the 911, defined by its high-revving naturally aspirated engine and minimal compromise. Introducing an open-top version without abandoning rear-wheel drive or a manual gearbox suggests Porsche is expanding the format while preserving its core principles.
Technically, the GT3 S/C mirrors the coupe’s fundamentals. It uses a 4.0-liter flat-six producing 510 horsepower, capable of reaching up to 9,000 rpm, paired exclusively with a six-speed manual transmission. The car features a fully automatic fabric roof and a strict two-seat layout, reinforcing its driver-centric focus. Lightweight construction remains central, with carbon components and other weight-saving measures keeping the mass close to that of the fixed-roof GT3.
According to English-language sources, the S/C designation stands for Sport Cabriolet, directly reflecting the concept behind the model: merging track-oriented engineering with an open-air driving experience. Importantly, it is not positioned as a limited edition, but as a regular addition to the GT family.
The broader Air|Water setting adds further context. Originating from Luftgekühlt, a showcase dedicated to air-cooled Porsche models, the event has evolved into a more inclusive platform covering the entire history of the brand. In 2026, it also highlighted 75 years of Porsche motorsport, with cars like the 962 prototype displayed alongside modern racers such as the 911 GT3 R.
This juxtaposition emphasizes continuity, linking decades of racing heritage with today’s road cars. Within that framework, the GT3 S/C appears less like an experiment and more like a natural extension — an attempt to carry forward the defining traits of the GT series into a new format.
As Air|Water continues to grow, with organizers already planning future expansions, the debut of the GT3 S/C fits into a broader trajectory. Porsche is not only unveiling a new model, but also exploring how far the boundaries of its most focused sports cars can be extended without losing their identity.
