Mercedes-Benz announces pre-series production of the all-electric VLE in Vitoria, Spain, ahead of its 2026 world premiere, marking a new era for van production.

Mercedes-Benz is preparing its plant in Vitoria, Spain, for a new chapter as pre-series production of the all-electric VLE is now underway. This is more than just the launch of another vehicle — it marks the beginning of the VAN.EA architecture, which will shape all future mid- and large-size vans from the brand.

The modernization of the site has been extensive. More than 90 percent of construction measures are complete, including a new body shop, a fully flexible paint shop, and a thoroughly upgraded assembly hall. These changes allow Vitoria to produce different models — from the VLE to the Vito and V-Class — on one line, offering flexibility between electric variants and state-of-the-art combustion engines.

Around 5,000 employees have completed 160 training programs, covering everything from new IT standards to the use of advanced materials. At the same time, the plant has reinforced its sustainability path: it has sourced 100% renewable electricity since 2013, installed its own photovoltaic system, and introduced geothermal heating and waste heat recovery from painting processes.

The VLE itself has already proven its capabilities in testing. In the wind tunnel, it achieved impressive aerodynamic results. On a long-distance drive from Stuttgart to Rome, only two 15-minute charging stops were needed. On the high-speed oval in Nardò, Italy, the van showed agility and strong dynamics, while in the Arctic Circle it confirmed reliability in freezing, snowy conditions. Although Mercedes-Benz has not yet disclosed exact specifications such as range, power, or battery size, the vehicle is positioned as a blend of sedan-like comfort and MPV versatility.

The project required investments exceeding one billion euros, the largest ever in the Basque Country’s automotive sector. For the region, it represents not only economic prospects but also the consolidation of Vitoria’s role as a strategic hub within the global Mercedes-Benz Vans network.

The official world premiere of the VLE will take place in the first half of 2026. At that point, Mercedes-Benz is expected to reveal more about MB.OS, the new operating system debuting in vans. For now, the Vitoria plant stands as a symbol of transition, combining seven decades of industrial tradition with a bold step into the electric era.
