Volkswagen introduces the ID. Polo and a new compact electric lineup, outlining its strategy to deliver affordable EVs in Europe starting from 2026.

Volkswagen is bringing five new electric models to market at once, including the ID. Polo with a starting price below €25,000. For the European market, this marks one of the lowest entry points into electric mobility from a major manufacturer, and it sits at the core of the brand’s new strategy.

The lineup includes the ID. Polo, ID. Cross, ID.3 Neo, along with their GTI performance variants. All of them are currently near-production concepts, with market launches scheduled to begin in 2026. Volkswagen describes this as the start of a new phase, a return to its core principles translated into the electric era.

The focus is clear: make electric cars accessible to a much wider audience. To achieve this, the company combines competitive pricing with quality and technologies typically found in higher segments. Even compact models are set to feature advanced driver assistance systems and updated digital interfaces.

The technical foundation is central to this approach. The new models are built on the MEB+ platform, an evolution of Volkswagen’s electric architecture. It introduces unified battery cells and improved packaging, allowing both cost reduction and increased efficiency. For the ID. Polo, battery capacities of up to 52 kWh and a driving range of up to 450 kilometres are projected, along with DC fast charging of up to 130 kW.

Driver assistance systems are also evolving. The next generation of Connected Travel Assist will, for the first time, be capable of automatically stopping the vehicle at red traffic lights. This feature will debut in compact models such as the ID. Polo, ID. Cross and ID.3 Neo.

The new lineup also reflects a redesigned visual identity. Volkswagen’s Pure Positive design language is based on stability, sympathy and distinctive character elements, and it is being implemented in a production model for the first time with the ID. Polo. The goal is a cleaner, more recognizable appearance.

At the same time, Volkswagen is building on its heritage. The Polo nameplate has been in production since 1975, with more than 20 million units delivered. The GTI badge, first introduced in 1976, is now transitioning into the electric era, with the ID. Polo GTI positioned as the first GTI of this new generation.

Production is centred in Europe. The ID. Polo will be built in Martorell, Spain, as part of a broader project within the Brand Group Core involving multiple brands. Volkswagen plans to produce these compact electric models in volumes reaching several hundred thousand units per year.

With this move, the company is reshaping its electric portfolio, shifting from higher-priced models toward the mass market. The launch of the ID. Polo and its related models in 2026 is expected to mark a key step in that transition.
