Audi and SAIC announced a new R&D center in Shanghai and four EV models for China. Explore how the partnership expands local development and connected car strategy.

Audi and SAIC are moving into the next phase of their partnership with the launch of a dedicated development center in Shanghai and plans to introduce four new models tailored specifically for China. The move reinforces a strategy focused on localized electric vehicle development and digital technologies for the world’s largest automotive market.

The new agreement covers the full value chain, from research and development to production. At its core is the AUDI Innovation & Technology Center in Shanghai, led by AUDI AG. The facility will focus on intelligent electrification, advanced driver assistance systems, and digital solutions, including AI-powered interiors and connected vehicle functions designed for Chinese users.

At the same time, Audi and SAIC confirmed the rollout of four new AUDI models based on the next generation of the Advanced Digitized Platform (ADP). This architecture is already used in current models and is designed for intelligent connected vehicles. Its defining feature is deep integration into China’s digital ecosystem and a faster development cycle enabled by joint engineering teams in China and Germany.

The AUDI lineup itself is still in its early stages. In 2025, the brand introduced the https://revbuzz.com/content/4136/audi-e5-sportback-named-2026-china-car-of-the-yearAUDI E5 Sportback, its first production electric vehicle, which later received the China Car of the Year 2026 award. The model measures nearly 4.9 meters in length, delivers up to 579 kW of power, and offers a range of up to 770 kilometers. Production takes place at a dedicated facility in Anting within the SAIC Volkswagen plant.

The next step is the AUDI E7X, the brand’s first SUV, set to debut at Auto China 2026. With a length of over five meters and power outputs of up to 500 kW, the model targets the premium segment with a strong focus on in-cabin digital experience and rear-seat comfort.

The creation of the AUDI brand for China reflects a broader shift in Audi’s strategy. Launched in 2024, the brand operates without the traditional four-ring logo and targets younger, tech-focused customers seeking deep integration of digital services, automated functions, and personalized user experiences.

The broader context is shaped by the Chinese market itself. China remains the largest and fastest-growing electric vehicle market, with EVs expected to account for around 60% of total sales. Against this backdrop, Audi is strengthening its local development capabilities and leveraging its long-standing partnership with SAIC, which spans four decades within Volkswagen Group’s joint ventures.

The new Shanghai center and expanded model lineup signal a shift toward developing technology within China rather than simply exporting it. The next phase will include the rollout of additional ADP-based models, with a third model already scheduled for launch in 2027.
