Hyundai has taken the top position in the 2026 U.S. News & World Report Best Hybrid and Electric Cars rankings, earning three awards—more than any other automaker. The Tucson Hybrid, IONIQ 5, and the new IONIQ 9 each secured first place in their respective categories, reinforcing the brand’s presence across multiple electrified vehicle segments.
Notably, the Tucson Hybrid and IONIQ 5 have now held their titles for a third consecutive year. This consistency reflects how both models continue to meet key evaluation criteria, including quality, efficiency, and value. For the 2026 rankings, U.S. News evaluated 138 hybrid and electric vehicles, taking into account fuel economy data, safety ratings, reliability metrics, and expert reviews.
The growing demand for electrified vehicles is also evident in Hyundai’s sales figures. In the United States, hybrid sales rose by 50% in March and 61% in the first quarter. Some models showed even stronger momentum, with the Sonata Hybrid recording more than 100% growth over the quarter. This trend stands out against a broader decline in the overall U.S. auto market, where electrified vehicles continue to gain traction.
The Tucson Hybrid remains a core model for Hyundai. Its hybrid system combines a 1.6-liter turbocharged engine with an electric motor, delivering a total output of around 231 horsepower along with strong torque figures. The model also features adjustable regenerative braking, offering improved control and efficiency.
The IONIQ 5 has established itself as one of the most technologically advanced electric SUVs in its class. Built on an 800-volt architecture, it supports ultra-fast charging up to 350 kW, allowing the battery to charge from 10% to 80% in approximately 18 to 20 minutes. With an EPA-estimated range exceeding 300 miles, it remains a practical option for everyday use.
The IONIQ 9 introduces a new dimension to Hyundai’s electric lineup. This three-row SUV accommodates up to seven passengers and offers an EPA-estimated range of up to 335 miles. In its European specification, it reaches up to 620 kilometers of range with a 110 kWh battery, targeting the growing demand for larger electric family vehicles.
Both the IONIQ 5 and IONIQ 9 are produced at Hyundai Motor Group’s new Metaplant America in Georgia. The facility, valued at approximately $7.6 billion, is designed to produce up to 300,000 electric vehicles annually and forms a central part of Hyundai’s expansion strategy in the U.S. market. The company has committed a total of $26 billion in investments in the United States through 2028.
The broader list of U.S. News winners highlights increasing competition across the segment, with models from Honda, Toyota, Nissan, and Rivian also recognized. Despite this, Hyundai secured multiple top positions, underscoring its strong and consistent performance in the hybrid and electric vehicle space.
